Scotland Send On A Substitute!

Press Release – Dated 26/09/20
Scotland Send On A Substitute!

Alex Maciver, an Explorer Scout from Perth & Kinross, has stepped up “from the bench” as first reserve to join the ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Team on what promises to be the journey of a lifetime!

Alex Maciver

Alex is from a small highland town called Aberfeldy. He holds the Young Leader belt and is currently working towards his Queen’s Scout and DofE Gold awards.

Alex has been to Poland and Switzerland with his local Scout troop, he was a participant at the Blair Atholl Jamborette in 2018 and he was lucky to be a participant in Unit 90 for the 24th World Scout Jamboree in North America.

Alex will be taking the place of Emma Johnston who for personal reasons has very sadly decided to withdraw from the actual journey to Antarctica. Emma intends to remain as part of the wider ReQuest2021 supporting team and she still aims to complete her personal project of producing some fun & educational children’s books about Antarctica.

In the Winter of 2021/22, the team of ten (8 from Kent and 2 from Scotland) will be sailing on the Bark Europa Tall Ship from South America to Port Lockroy in Antarctica.  Exactly 100 years after  two Scouts sailed on Shackleton’s final Quest Expedition the project‘s objectives will be: –

  • To participate as members of the crew on the Barque Europa on a voyage to Antarctica.
  • For each of the participants to carry out an Antarctic research project and present the results upon return.
  • To visit Port Lockroy base that was established by Scout James Marr and fly a Scout flag on Antarctica.
  • To unveil an expedition plaque dedicated to Marr & Mooney at Gilwell Park and Fordell Firs Scottish HQ.
  • To involve the younger sections in join-in educational fun  activities in the form of Antarctica In An Ice Box.

The team have fundraised just over £60,000 so far with a project target of £110,000. King penguin level sponsors (each donating over £1000) to date include the Deep-Sea Scouts, the Earl of Radnor and the Boatmen’s Charity (Deal). Fundraising continues despite the impact of Coronavirus and they only have until the end of June 2021 to raise another £50,000.

ReQuest2021 Project Mission

Some more work on refinining the mission for the ReQuest2021 project which can now be summarised under the 3 banners of Peace ~ Environment ~ Heritage

Antarctica offers up three unique perspectives as a flagship Global Project:-

• A Beacon of Hope and Peace for all Diverse Nations & Creeds Working in Harmony

• A Living Environmental Laboratory for Climate Change and Antarctic Wildlife

• A Rich Heritage of Scouting’s Connection with the Golden Age of Polar Exploration

Shackleton The Penguin Is Celebrating!

Shackleton the Penguin the team mascot for ReQuest2021 has something to celebrate today as the scout team of eight from Kent and two from Scotland have just hit the halfway point with fundraising for their Antarctic Research Project! The team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has sponsored them so far along the way… Precisely 600 days before the ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Project Team plan to set sail for Antarctica the ReQuest2021 team have just this week passed the £55,000 mark on the way to their £110,000 target.

The team’s Virgin Money Giving fundraising page can be found on the following link: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/request2021

The ReQuest2021 Team are: Matt Wood, George Stonor, Darcey Holmes, Genevieve Scullion, Alan Funstuff Noake, Cathy Mummery, Lucy Morgan, Sam Payne, Laura Bernard and Emma Johnston

In the Winter of 2021/22, the team of Scouts will be sailing on the Bark Europa Tall Ship from South America to Port Lockroy in Antarctica. Exactly 100 years after two Scouts sailed on Shackleton’s final Quest Expedition back in 1921 the project‘s objectives will be: –

  • To unveil an expedition plaque dedicated to Marr & Mooney at Gilwell Park and Port Lockroy in Antarctica.
  • To involve the younger sections in join-in educational fun activities in the form of Antarctica In An Ice Box.

The challenge facing the team now is to raise the other 50% – another £55,000 by the 30th June 2021. It is set to be a busy year of fundraising and the setbacks caused by the Coronavirus lockdown will make it even more difficult to achieve. We are dedicated to making the dream a reality!

An update on our two Commemorative Plaques!

Really excited to report that Mark Brooks from Canterbury (a member of the Lettering Arts Trust) has just sent us these photos of our two Caithness stone commemorative plaques in final production – he just has the world scout logo to finalise now. It may be a while before we can actually pick them up for real but great to see they are nearly done!

The larger one will be installed at Gilwell and officially unveiled on Sunday 5th September 2021. The smaller of the two will be coming with us to Antarctica and then on our return will be installed and officially unveiled at Fordell Firs the Scottish Scout HQ.

Thanks so much for sharing some really good news for the project during these tough times for our fundraising Mark Brooks!

Our Case for Support

CLIMATE CHANGE ACTIVIST GRETA THUNBERG SAYS,

If a few children can get headlines all over the world just by not going to school – then imagine what we all could do together if we really wanted to.

She certainly has a point but do you think young people should strike from school to raise awareness of Climate Change?

Well now you can help send some young people to ‘school’ in Antarctica instead! The Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Project is doing just that. Our mission is to develop six young Antarctica ambassadors who then will create a future legacy by sharing their polar research experience to inspire thousands of other young people.

Each of the young people YOU help support will have to:-

…FUNDRAISE towards the overall total costs for their expedition.

…PROMOTE Scouting’s strong heritage links with Shackleton’s 1921 Quest Expedition.

…LEARN how to crew a one-hundred-year-old sailing vessel through Antarctic waters.

…EDUCATE younger children about climate change and endangered Antarctic wildlife.

…UNDERTAKE an Antarctic Research Project and present their results upon returning.

11 Unique Antarctic Research Projects

Kent Scouts Global Projects now has a strong track record of running large successful international expeditions. Back in 2009 they ran an eco-awareness training project in South Africa, in 2012 a team climbed Kilimanjaro, in 2018 twenty-four scouts helped with school building and malaria education in Ghana and in 2020 a group are heading off to work with a charity supporting street Children in Kenya.

And now the money bit…! To deliver this project successfully is going to require total funds of £110,000 by 30th June 2021. Flights and Antarctic voyage amount to £10,000 for each of the ten project participants. Plus, another £10,000 is required for pre-expedition training, equipment and resources to achieve the other project objectives – such as the heritage plaques being carved out of Caithness slate which are £1000 each.

So, if you live in Kent (or Aberdeen!) you can attend one of our popular Community Fundraising Events. We are also seeking Corporate Sponsorship and can in turn promote your brand on all our printed literature and online media. Finally, we welcome fresh ideas from individuals or organisations to fundraise for us.

Are you planning a trip to Antarctica in January 2022?

The Kent Scouts ReQuest2021 Antarctic Research Project team are really keen to hear from any member of Scouting worldwide who may already potentially be planning to be in South Georgia (perhaps as part of an Antarctic Cruise?) on the 5th January 2022.

One of our secondary project objectives is to have a Scout in uniform at Shackleton’s grave to represent all Scouts and pay our respects on that day.

If you or any Scouting friend you know will be there on that date then please contact project leader Alan Noake on: alan.noake@kentscouts.org.uk

Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Grave on South Georgia

The Caithness Stone has stone has just arrived from Scotland!

The Caithness Stone

A visit today to lettering artist Mark Brooks from Canterbury. The Caithness Stone has just arrived from Scotland for the two plaques we are commissioning as part of the ReQuest2021 project commemorating James Marr and Norman Mooney, the two scouts who took part in Shackleton’s Quest Expedition to the Antarctic in 1921. It is a beautiful stone, ideal for inscriptional work and has outstanding weathering capabilities.

The approved artwork

Both stones will have the same design but will be different in size. The larger one will be sited in an appropriate place at Scout HQ Gilwell Park, and the smaller one will accompany the ReQuest2021 team on the expedition to Antarctica in the Winter of 2021/22.

A practice run on a spare piece of stone

The plaques will be a celebration of the two scouts’ participation in the expedition. We did not feel the need for solemnity, so Mark has designed them with bold energetic letter forms. Lively ligatures and playful nesting of letters are used in order that the letters fit neatly into a rectangular block and with an even pattern. We want the stones to be as visually engaging as possible. The letters are tightly and efficiently packed into the stones’ dimensions in order to reduce the footprint. The larger stone will be an echo of its smaller cousin.

The stones will be cut using two cleverly overlaid templates – Template 1
