Monday 15th August 2022 – VOYAGE END / ERIK / MATTHEW

We made such good progress with fair winds back across the Drake Passage that we gained an extra day. This meant we could spend a day at Harberton, Tierra Del Fuego to visit a museum of marine mammal bones. They have thousands of bone specimens from whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, etc., including extremely rare beaked whale skeletons. Afterwards we also had a wonderful group BBQ on the shore. This episode also includes REQUEST interviews with fellow passengers Erik Kleine from Holland and Matthew Short from the USA.

Shackleton The Penguin visits Waiuku, New Zealand

Shackleton The Penguin has just paid a visit to a street named Ernest Shackleton Place in the small rural town of Waiuku, New Zealand!

Photo of Terry Short who is a descendant of Ernest Shackleton and as a hands on property developer it was he who named the Street after Ernest Shackleton. A typical Kiwi bloke wearing shorts even in winter!

This Shackleton The Penguin will now be presented to the Whangarei, New Zealand Shackleton Sea Scouts hopefully at the Hamilton Sea Scout Regatta in September 2022.

Huge thanks to Ron Bird (Deep Sea Scout based in Waiuku, New Zealand) for arranging the photo and presentation.
