ReQuest2021 Podcast Ep. 25

EPISODE 25 – Mon 1st November 2021– A good luck message from Chief Scout Bear Grylls, a big plug for our REQUEST2021 YouTube channel – there are some great videos now of our Thames Event held on 17th September 2021 along with all sorts of other videos including craft activities for young people and the ReQuest interview with Helen Smith. Helen has bravely stepped up to join the ReQuest2021 team very late in the day. Helen is a civil servant in her day job and is District Scout Network Commissioner for Gravesham District. She was one of the original applicants for ReQuest back in 2018 and has been waiting in the wings as first reserve for the senior participants ever since. So having interviewed all the other project participants it was only appropriate that I interview Helen as well before we go.

NOTE: I have done my best to edit out the background noise, but it was recorded in a busy pub and it has proved impossible to remove all of it.

ReQuest2021 Podcast Ep. 19

EPISODE 19 – Sat 1st May 2021 – This episode there is some recording of when I went out and about around Kent delivering our Antarctica In An Icebox resources; plus a few bits recorded on our sponsored Row-A-Thon launch whilst at the James Caird hall at Dulwich College; and then there is the ReQuest interview with Vanessa O’Brien. Vanessa is a British mountaineer and an American mountaineer (because of her dual nationality), explorer, aquanaut, author, and public speaker. Her achievements are extensive. Vanessa is the First Woman to Reach Earth’s Highest and Lowest Points, a Guinness World Record for summiting Mt. Everest (8,848m) in 2012 and diving in a submersible to the eastern pool of Challenger Deep (10,925m) in 2020. Vanessa became the first American woman to summit K2 and the first British woman to successfully summit K2 (because of her dual nationality) on 28 July 2017 and received the SES Explorer of the Year in 2018 for her efforts. Vanessa proudly raised the UN Women’s Flag at the summit of K2 to show the power of women’s courage and determination. Vanessa received a Guinness World Record for summiting the Seven Summits (including Mount Vinson in Antarctica) in 295 days, the fastest time a woman first achieved this goal.  She has also skied the Last Degree to the North and South poles, completing the Explorers Grand Slam in 11 months.

Some follow up thoughts from Philippa received after recording for the podcast…

“For variety you are welcome to swap my ginger biscuits for mint imperials. I never have travelled without them and have a tin full in my car. My grandchildren call them magic mints.”

“Another fascinating link is that Louisa Young, Kathleen Scott’s daughter by her second marriage is a goddaughter of Betjeman. So, Betjeman and Scott link.”
